Professor emeritus of musicology at Université Paris Saclay, Paris-born Philippe Gumplowicz has produced films on music for television and radio programs for France Inter, France Musique and France Culture. After directing a university laboratory specializing in research into the links between music and history, he currently co-directs the international research programs « Américanization par les arts ? » and « Musique et imaginaires politiques des années trente en Europe », in collaboration with Princeton University and Université Paris Saclay.

Philippe recently contributed to Albin Michel’s Histoire juive de la France, 2023, and co-edited Music and Postwar Transitions, New York, Berghahn Books, 2023.This was part of a symposium which he presented at Princeton University last year. He plans to cover the 1850-1930 time period, and if there is continued interest, he will return to Birmingham to present on the 1930-2022 time period when he is available.
